I only started any of the games a year and a half ago, but since then I have played all the games in the series that are available on PC – even the Gearbox expansions – and I am deeply enthralled by the universe and annoyed that it is left in such an unceremonious cliffhanger ending. Now I am a huge fan of the Half-Life series, and the Portal spinoff series. But strangely a large video gaming company with financial equity to rival EA, that has a hand in the majority of PC gaming through their Steam distribution platform, stubbornly refuses to announce a sequel that throngs of people ask for, and has actually made people angry at their artistic integrity – a precious commodity in the industry. Hell, even a small arts-driven game subsidiary would put out Okami 2: Everyone Loves Puppies and be well paid for it. You wouldn’t see this behavior by Ubisoft, Activision or Capcom. In an industry which aggressively makes sequel after sequel for the profitability of name recognition, and which is infamous for its aggressive hype, untrue promises, cynical technical compromises and occasional bullying tactics simply to sell more games, Half-Life 3 is somehow one of the most anticipated games of all time, even while the publisher won’t acknowledge production of it, despite the game’s virtually guaranteed profitability. Half-Life is an enigma in the medium of video games.
